January

The decal on some baby clothes with a picture of a lion and text that says the king of lion

Obviously, the big story for me in 2025 is the baby, who turned 1 month old in January. Unfortunately I can’t post pics of the baby, but he is ”The king of lion”.

February

A 5 kg bag of rice priced ¥4180

Around this time, rice prices started to spike. Plot twist: they haven’t come back down 🫠

March

A cool bird with a long skinny neck and dark feathers

I saw a cool bird.

April

A model illustrating chopped sizes of carrots, ranging from very small to larger chunks, according to babies’s age

I went to a 離乳食 (weening) class and learned about the carrot continuum.

May

A Japanese peekaboo book called Inai, Inai, Baaa!

We began introducing the classics of Japanese literature to the baby.

June

A collage of various Chocomint snacks

Chocomint season 🥰

July

The tray of a baby chair covered with demolished carrot pieces

Began introducing solids to baby. Although I tried a little baby-led weening, letting him demolish a carrot, we mostly did purées and followed the Japanese playbook

August

Assigned came in reading the 20th anniversary of the Tsukuba express

I marked my 20-year Japanniversary.

September

A dish of stirfry, chicken, red onions, peppers, chili, tomato, topped with cilantro

i learned a couple fun new dishes to cook this year. i think I got pollo saltado (peruvian stir fry) down pretty good. I also learned some basic Indian curries, which are still a work in progress.

October

A small baby sized black pleather jacket with a price tag for ¥510

This was the coolest baby clothes we found at Book Off. 500 yen for a black pleather jacket? Yes, please 😎

Bonus for October: Another year, another Yamathon — 43 km in 12 hours!

November

A turnip field

Wholesome family activity: We went turnip picking 🫜

December

A small birthday cake with a little candle on it

Happy first birthday to the baby!
